A Short History

Dr. G. Arthur Woolsey (1913-2004)
He was born in Sayre, PA in 1913, and attended Practical Bible Training School in Johnson City, NY where he received his calling to ministry. He went on to became a graduate of Baptist Bible Seminary in Johnson City, NY. He pastored three churches in Pennsylvania from 1934 to 1936 and pastored from 1936-1944 the Broad Acres Community Church, now Central Baptist Church, Binghamton, NY.

In 1945-1952, he was pastor of the First Baptist Church, North Tonawanda, NY, at the same time he started a radio program over WHLD in Niagara Falls, NY and also established Calvary Baptist Church, Lockport, NY. In 1952-1959, he pastored Walnut Street Baptist Church, Waterloo, IA and started the Cedar Heights Baptist Church, Cedar Falls, IA.

He served as president of Baptist Bible Seminary (from 1960-1970, which relocated in 1968 to Clarks Summit, now know as Clarks Summit University)

In 1970-1979, he served as the first president of Spurgeon Baptist Bible College, Mulberry, FL. He served as interim pastor at Fellowship Baptist Church in Lakeland in 1971 where Spurgeon’s early classes met.


Spurgeon Baptist Bible College merged with Piedmont Baptist College in 2004 to become Piedmont’s Spurgeon School of Online Education.

He was the Alumnus of the Year at Baptist Bible College in 1978.

He has served several churches in Florida and was instrumental in the starting of Maranatha Village in Sebring, FL and served as a member of the board. He had served on the board of trustees of Baptist Bible College; Board of the Association of Baptist for World Evangelism; Council of Eighteen of the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches.

These photos were unmarked, so I don’t know if they are from Practical Bible Training School or from Baptist Bible Seminary, or the dates. These were in my Grandmother’s scrapbook. They are probably from the early 1930’s.
